Kingsmead Equestrian Centre based in the beautiful Surrey countryside has been an Accessibility Mark accredited centre since 2015. With three riding arenas and miles of off road hacking, Kingsmead prides itself on inclusivity for disabled riders.

The centre caters for riders with a range of disabilities such as autism and blindness to those with more complex needs, with a total of 56 riders participating in Accessibility Mark sessions, several riders attend the centre for lessons more than once a week.

Most of the sessions are group lessons working in walk and trot but the centre also provides opportunities for riders that would like to develop their skills further with more advanced lessons for riders to learn how to canter and enjoy the thrill of jumping.

Hacking out is one of the greatest pleasures of horse riding and Kingsmead regularly lead out riders on nearby bridle paths, which allows disabled riders to experience a greater sense of freedom.

Kingsmead Equestrian owner, Fiona Tothill describes the centre as a special place, something which is reinforced by two Highly Recommended awards this year, in the Equestrian Business Awards Riding School of the Year and the SEIB Large Riding School of the Year.

Said Fiona: “We are a non-competitive yard although will support our Accessibility Mark riders however we can. Where possible and appropriate we encourage our disabled riders to ride with their non-disabled peers. At Kingsmead you will find everyone is supportive, and it is this all-encompassing support that makes Kingsmead a safe and special place.

“We are very proud that three of our riders have competed and been placed at RDA competitions including the RDA National Championships and we have also assisted participants to gain a place at college which has helped them to go on to have a career with horses.”

Accessibility Mark status is awarded to a riding centre that has been approved by the RDA following training and assessment. The close link with the RDA means that it can offer continuous support to the establishment to ensure it provides a first-class experience that aims to be hugely beneficial to riders of varying levels of disability.
