The sixth Alltech - Hartpury Conference is being held on May 4, 2016 at Hartpury College.
This annual conference is aimed at students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level interested in the application of emerging scientific and business oriented research, to promote the enhancement of performance in the equestrian athlete and within equestrian sport.
Students are invited to submit individual scientific papers that review emerging research within the field of equestrian science, including the broad themes of equine behaviour and welfare, equine business management, breeding, genetics and stud management, equine health and therapy, equine nutrition and feeding, in the form of both oral or porter presentations.
Successful students will then get the chance to deliver a presentation on their findings to a conference audience, with Alltech providing prizes to be awarded to the best undergraduate and postgraduate presentations.
Abstracts are welcomed from students from all over the UK and more recently the conference has pleasingly been in receipt of submissions from a number of international institutes.
The Alltech – Hartpury Conference will also play host to two key note speakers, Dr Tim Parkin and Professor Derek Knottenbelt from the University of Glasgow.
Dr Tim Parkin is a senior lecturer in Equine Clinical Sciences, specialising in equine epidemiology. He is particularly interested in identifying methods to prevent musculoskeletal injury and fatality in the thoroughbred racehorse.
Professor Derek Knottenbelt’s expertise in equine internal medicine is recognised both nationally and internationally, particularly in equine oncology and dermatology.
His work has been published widely in journals and textbooks and he is frequently invited to speak at national and international meetings. He received the Animal Health Trust Scientific Award in 2003, the BEVA (Blue Cross) Welfare Award in 2004 and the OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours of 2005 for his services to Equine Medicine.
The Alltech – Hartpury Conference provides a unique opportunity for students to share their research and gain some valuable experience before embarking on their careers within the equine industry.
