Abingdon & Witney College recently received a major boost to their donation drive for a volunteering expedition to Nakuru, Kenya. Seven students and two staff members from the College will embark on their journey with African Adventures, a humanitarian and financial support provider for educational projects in Africa, in July 2017 to help with the completion of a new school for 300 children and other projects that will involve building work and sports coaching.

Fundraising has been ongoing over the past few months to generate money towards their trip costs. On Wednesday 19 April, members from the Witney Rotary Club helped them get that much closer to their goal, with Richard Smith, Brian Wright and Keith Crawford generously presenting the College with a cheque for £500.

The Rotary Club work locally and internationally to support charities, fundraising events, community projects, and youth activities and provide many other important contributions to help those in need.

This donation was much to the delight of the lead organiser of the trip Mickey Day and the College’s Principal, Di Batchelor:

“We’d like to extend a warm thank you to the Witney Rotary Club on behalf of those involved with the volunteering trip at the College,” said Di. “Every pound raised is a step closer to the students having an opportunity for a life-changing adventure, but more importantly it’s a step closer in helping to make a difference for those children who need it most in Kenya.”

Next up in the mission to generate more fundraising is a staff skydive. Having already been postponed twice due to bad weather, a forthcoming date for the daring jump will be announced soon.

Frankie Russ, Communications Officer at African Adventures, said; “We are so excited that Abingdon & Witney College has chosen to embark on an African Adventure; the group have an incredible journey ahead. Students who take part in college expeditions like this are really opening their eyes to the wider world. Not only will they have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a different culture and way of life, but we are confident that they will grow as individuals, learn to work together as a team with their peers and develop skills that simply cannot be learnt inside the classroom.”

African Adventures gives people from all around the UK the chance to enjoy volunteering experiences in Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar with their locally run and led partner projects. African Adventures provides humanitarian, financial and developmental support to 21 educational partner projects, helping to improve the lives of 20,000 young people, through the provision of schooling and food.
