Taking on the care of a horse for the first time is a memorable milestone in anyone’s life. Perhaps you had a lead rein pony as a child, or fulfilled a long-held dream by taking on your first horse later in life? Redwings has just launched the ‘My First Horse’ survey to help find out more about why, when and how people make that exciting move from riding lessons or helping care for friends’ horses, to taking on responsibility for a horse themselves.
Even with experience and lots of planning, we know that nothing quite prepares us for the highs and lows, perks and pitfalls of horse ownership. Our first horse often teaches us the most, and has a very special place in our hearts and on our equestrian outlook.
“Our pilot phase of this project suggested we have a lot to learn about the thought processes and preparations involved when someone takes on their first horse” explains Andie McPherson, Redwings Campaigns Manager. “We know that horses can make a huge contribution to a person’s physical and mental health, but that not getting the right horse for you, or not having support as a new owner, can increase risks to the wellbeing of both horse and human. We’re keen to find out more so we can help to support people at this exciting, but sometimes daunting stage of their equestrian journey.”
The survey will be launched on 8th October to tie in with World Mental Health day on Sunday 10th October. It will then be available until 18th November, allowing existing and previous owners of all ages, backgrounds and equestrian interests to share what taking on a horse involved for them. Redwings are asking as many people as possible to take part to help provide a really broad range of experiences.
The survey is being supported by big equine brands such as Spillers and Equlibrium, who have both donated fabulous goodies for the prize draw which all survey respondents can enter, including an Equilibrium Massage Mitt Hotspot, which any horse will love!
