Bishop Burton College and University Centre (UCBB), is renowned for its first-class equine facilities, which include world-class arenas, specialist rider fitness and performance suites, interactive dressage simulators and an equine therapy centre with spa, solarium and stocks. They deliver courses from diploma to undergraduate and are a BHS Approved Riding School and Examination Centre.
But in the competitive yet growing equine industry, you need more than just learnt skills to succeed - you need entrepreneurial spirit and experience if you want to create your own journey. This is a mindset that the College firmly believes in and love to share and empower its students with at UCBB.
In January they hosted the third annual Enterprise Event at UCBB, which focussed on this very subject. Despite the inevitable online format, they were able to connect students with inspiring industry figures who shared their own stories of success, resilience, adaptability and entrepreneurial vision. The purpose of the event is to develop, support, prepare and inspire our students with entrepreneurial aspirations for when they graduate. Speakers from a broad range of equine, land-based, animal and business enterprises shared their stories, beliefs and ethos for success - their first speaker was no exception.
Freedom Zampaladus, CEO of the Urban Equestrian Academy, set up a ground-breaking social enterprise and delivered an honest and motivating talk live from his Leicester base. The Academy’s aim is an important one - to improve social and racial diversity in the UK’s equestrian industry. Freedom talked about his current activities and future plans to open doors that have not previously been visible in the equestrian world. Freedom’s unique journey to this enterprise was fascinating, and whilst probably very different from our audience, the common love of horses and their ability to provide positivity, therapy or even escape cross all barriers and equine communities.
At a time when everyone is feeling the isolation caused by social distance, he explained that the idea of community was key to the success of this social enterprise, as well as a shared love of horses. His ethos is very much aligned with UCBB’s and is focused on widening participation for those with the least experience or access to the equestrian world.
The Event provided an abundance of advice and guidance for the budding entrepreneur, but importantly it also offered insight into the need for resilience, adaptability and self-belief to succeed.
Rebecca Brassington, Equine HE Academic Lead at UCBB said,
“The most heart-warming take away point for me was the important role of the horse for those lucky enough to own or have access to one, and for this we should be extremely thankful.”
