Horse owner, Jasmine Smith was just about at her wits end when looking for a horse feed for her beloved Connemara, Granite. On the one hand the 10-year-old gelding is fussy when it comes to forage, but is also a good-doer, while at the same time needing a low starch, low sugar hard feed as he can be hot headed.

While Jasmine lives in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, her horses are kept with her mum in Louth, North Lincolnshire so it is very much a team effort to keep them in the very best condition.

A Business Development Manager for a Building Society, Jasmine’s career requires a lot of travelling so having the horses with her mum gives her peace of mind they are being well looked after when she is away.

Said Jasmine: “My favourite thing to do is to compete the horses in any and all disciplines, we absolutely live for every element of the competition - from the preparation to the performance and my mum and I have been doing this since before I could walk!

“Granite’s show name is Omey Patrick and he is 15.2hh and just a star. We compete in dressage, showing, working hunter and show jumping and have great aspirations to event too!

“When I was looking to change his feed I was talking to my local feed supplier, Churchills in North Somercotes. We were struggling to find quality hay/haylage that Granite would eat, because he is very fussy, and also that did not make him too hot-headed or fatten him up too much.

“He's a very, very good-doer and excitable at the best of times! He is also quite accident prone too, so we have to "Granite proof" almost everything!

“Dawn at Churchills recommended Timothy HorseHage and Mollichaff Calmer and we have never looked back.

“He has Timothy HorseHage everyday as forage and the Mollichaff Calmer complete feed once a day.  Since he has been on this feed regime the change in him has been significant!

“For a start he eats every bit and doesn’t waste anything. His weight and condition is better than ever, therefore helping his overall performance and fitness.

“Since feeding the Mollichaff Calmer, he's remained a cool head in competitions and is far less distracted. What's best, we can take his feed to competitions as it's easily transportable in the bags. We've also been known to use the bags as jump fillers and used them in the school at home to circle around! We can also keep on track how much he is eating as the HorseHage is sectioned.

“Granite is very special to us. At his very first show he was in the top three in good company in his first Working Hunter class at the ESUK championships in 2018.  This memory sticks out as he was so green and hadn't jumped a course, let alone in competition.

“In 2019 we concentrated more on dressage and he was consistently scoring 75%+ at prelim and novice level and while 2020 was wiped out due to Covid we have recently started heading back out again, and we are so excited!”
