From leaping leprechauns to dressage Disney style, a series of fun events run by Hartpury’s equine students have raised hundreds of pounds for charity.
The second year degree students were tasked with running equine-related shows as part of their event organisation module, which involved looking at everything from risk assessments to marketing. They were supported by lecturer Jeremy Michaels with all profits going to the charity of their choice.
One event was ‘Strictly Come Disney’, with more than 100 people enjoying watching dressage riders compete in the main Hartpury equine area all dressed as Disney characters, along with the event directors. More than £200 was raised for Bristol Zoo charity ‘Save Wildlife’ and the event was kindly sponsored by Wessex Garages, Mercia Road, Gloucester.
Event director, Foundation Equine Performance degree student Clementine Seymour, said: “Running Strictly Come Disney made me appreciate the time and effort that goes into creating an event like this and I’m extremely proud of my team, who put in so much hard work to make the event a success. It was a magical evening and there was a real buzz around the event. The competitors and spectators all had a lot of fun.”
Another of the groups ran a St Patrick’s themed novelty showjumping event, also in the main arena. More than £100 was raised for the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA); a charity which provides support and advice to people with spinal cord injuries and their family members.
Spectators were entertained by exciting mirrored pairs jumping and a high quality accumulator class before the ‘Chase me Charlie’ class was won with an exceptional height of 1.20m. However, that was overshadowed by the horseless leprechauns, who sprung over 1.35 metres!
The raffle was supported by Toggi clothing, Field and Tack, Showquest, Blue Chip, NAF, Spillers, Cheltenham Racecourse and many more. Tony Stephenson, regional peer support officer from SIA, presented the raffle prizes.
Tutor Jeremy Michaels, said: "All the students worked so hard to ensure their event was a success and I felt very proud of their achievements. They have learned a great deal about the many elements that need to come together to run an event.
“Thanks to all those who supported the events, including the local community and Hartpury staff and students. Everyone had a lot of fun and the money raised will make a big difference to the chosen charities.”
