Hartpury students showcased their equine prowess to take the spoils at an inter-college competition recently.
The college welcomed students from Lackham College, Wiltshire, to a friendly inter-college competition at Hartpury with a view to staging an event on a bigger scale in future.
The colleges each split their students into two teams - Lackham had a green and a blue team while Hartpury had a red and a black team, representing the college colours.
Both teams for each college then combined scores to create an overall result, with Hartpury coming out on top after a day of equine challenges.
The competition consisted of three stages - a dressage test, a show jumping test and a group quiz. Two members of each team took part in the dressage, two in the jumping, and then all team members came together to complete the quiz. The riding section of the competition was completed on the Hartpury College horses, which were selected through each team drawing a horse’s names from an envelope.
Hanna Bertorelli took first place for the Hartpury red team in the dressage test, with Amelia Humphries following suit and claiming top place for the same team in the show jumping section. The Hartpury red team and Lackham blue team drew in first place in the final quiz stage, with Hartpury sitting at the summit at the end of the day’s action.
Clare Farmer, competition organiser and an equine lecturer at Hartpury, said: “We had a wonderful day that was supported by staff and students from both Hartpury and Lackham.
The students had a great deal of fun and really benefited from the competition pressure. Hopefully we will be able to plan and run similar competitions next year and are looking to develop them further.”
