HAVING watched an inspirational Parelli demonstration last year, when she saw a national competition to win natural horsemanship training, horse owner Helen Bates decided to enter.
Based in Maidstone, Kent, Helen a Project Manager for a water company couldn’t believe her luck when she was chosen as the lucky winner from more than 2,000 entries.
Helen watched the Parelli demonstration at last year’s Trek summer camp and making the £500 prize even more exciting for her is the fact that the training will be with Parelli 3* Instructor Terri Martinus who was the Parelli professional providing the demonstration that fired her imagination to learn more about natural horsemanship.
The proud owner of a four-year-old Arab called Audacious or Owen as he is known at home, Helen bought him in May this year just a few weeks into his development and when he had only just been backed.
Admitting that she is quite a novice with young horses and fully appreciating that she might have her hands full with a cheeky Arab, Helen has had help from a professional with Owen’s schooling, while she has been enjoying hacking and getting him out and about to see the world.
Having participated in Endurance fun rides in the past with her old horse that she sadly lost at the age of 22, Helen hopes to compete in more serious Endurance competitions with Owen in the future and possibly have a go at Trek.
A relative newcomer to the principles of Parelli, Helen hopes that Terri will help her to build a strong relationship with Owen so that they can progress as partners together.
As Helen is so busy with her work, she keeps Owen on assisted livery near to her home, where Terri will visit them to get their Parelli journey underway.
“I was so surprised and thrilled to be told that I had won the competition, as I have never won anything before and to find out it was with Terri Martinus was just the icing on the cake,” said Helen.
“To witness her demonstration, where she had horses doing things in minutes that the rest of us would struggle to get them to do over the course of a week was just awe inspiring and I just cannot wait to get started,” said Helen.
