Mollichaff – the name makes you think immediately of chaffs, but are you aware that this well-known brand from the producer of HorseHage also makes complete high fibre feeds plus a specialist product for older horses and ponies and a molasses-free alfalfa product?
The Mollichaff range has five different ‘chaffs’ which are fortified with added ingredients from limestone to provide additional calcium for strong bones and healthy growth, to a high-oil chaff, flavoured with cherry!
Our specialist chaffs are produced from top quality, chopped wheat and oat straws which have been dust-extracted and lightly dressed with a variety of ingredients, individually tailoring the chaff to your horse’s needs. Our chaffs have an open texture, unlike some heavily molassed chaffs which can be sticky and lumpy.

As well as making your horse’s meal times a little more interesting, Mollichaff stimulates the production of saliva and slows down the passage of food throughout the gut. Mollichaff can help to promote good digestion and will satisfy a stabled horse’s psychological need to chew. It takes up to 8000 chews per kilo to eat compared to as few as 1200 for concentrates!
More horse owners are beginning to realise the value of feeding a fibre-based diet to their animals in place of concentrates with a high cereal content. Not only is it a more natural way for a horse to eat, but it can reduce the risk of gastric ulcers too.
The Mollichaff range of ‘complete’ feeds has four products to choose from – HoofKind for laminitics (and also a great choice for good-doers), Calmer for nervous or excitable horses (also a good choice for box rest), Condition for encouraging weight gain, and Donkey - a balanced, high fibre feed for donkeys and mules (also suitable for laminitics). All these four complete feeds contain a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement and, when fed at the recommended levels, need no further concentrates adding, just plenty of good quality forage such as HorseHage.
Mollichaff Veteran is a high fibre forage mix which can be used to complement the forage ration where necessary. It is ideal for older horses and ponies or those that cannot consume long forage and require a partial hay replacer. Despite its name, it is also a good choice for youngstock.
We also have a great value alfalfa product in our range, which does not contain molasses. Mollichaff Alfalfa Oil is made from pure alfalfa mixed with a generous dressing of soya oil. It provides a slow release, medium energy level and is ideal for horses and ponies that require increased condition or energy without the fizziness associated with feeding grains. It can be used either as part of the forage ration or in place of hard feed.
