Nathan Evans 18, originally from Magherafelt, has been apprentice for Mick Easterby in Yorkshire since the beginning of April last year. He rode his first winner just a few weeks later at Thirsk on board Among Angels, and hasn’t looked back.
Since then Nathan has produced an enviable strike rate for any apprentice jockey, riding 16 winners from 138 rides in under a year for the North Yorkshire based trainer. His latest win coming at Chelmsford on Bosham, on the 11th of February.
Son of Paul & Claire Evans of Marsh Kyfe Equestrian Centre, Nathan has been in the saddle as long as he can remember. Starting off as a very talented showjumper, he is well known on the pony circuit in Ireland, having competed in 128 to 148 up and down the country. It was during this time that he first came across Horse First. “We always used Horse First products at home” said Nathan.
It was a natural progression for Nathan from the excitement of ponies to racing. “I went for a trial at RACE in Kildare, but before I was accepted, I had been offered the position of apprentice with Mick Easterby, and I couldn’t turn that down.” This seems like a great decision now, with another ride on Bosham on the cards at Wolverhampton on Monday, Nathan Evans, is definitely one to watch.
Paddy Hughes managing director of Horse First said “We are delighted to welcome Nathan to Team Horse First. He is our first sponsored flat jockey and he joins the team of national hunt jockeys; Robbie Power and Paul Carberry. Our team here at Horse First feels Nathan has hit the ground running in England, using his experience riding as a junior showjumper to contribute to his success and determination as a flat jockey and we wish Nathan every success in his future.”
