Mark Davies was an event rider who tragically died at the Burghley Horse Trials in 1988. His parents, Jane and the late Michael Davies, established the fund in his memory to help injured riders.
The fund helps support anyone who has suffered as a result of a horse-related accident and in times when there is nowhere else to turn, helping people from all walks of life, irrespective of whether the accident happened on or around horses.
Anyone who is suffering or has suffered from a horse-related accident could qualify for assistance to improve or maintain their quality of life.
Serious accidents, such as those often occurring in equestrian sports, not only impact on the victim but also their family and friends, so in this instance the fund helps to support those who become ‘carers’.
The assistance provided can be in the form of access to professional or medical legal advice, and practical help in the form of wheelchairs, special beds, house adaptations, stair lifts, physiotherapy, stable help and financial assistance to help individuals cope with both their immediate and long-term problems.
Often just a listening ear is all that is required to help individuals better understand the challenges created by life-changing accidents.
Every penny donated to the charity means they can help another person in need. Just £10 funds a carer for an hour; £50 funds a physiotherapy treatment, £100 is the cost of a neuro-physio session and £1500 can fund a much-needed wheelchair.
Fund Co-ordinator, Rosemary Lang said of the help they offer:” We are here to support injured riders when no other help is available. We are funded entirely by the generosity of our supporters and do our best to help riders look after riders.”
The wide ranging advice offered by the Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund as well as moral, practical and financial support, has proved itself to be a lifeline for injured horse riders and handlers across Britain.
