The sport of polo – well known for its fast paced, thrilling spectacle requires horse and rider to be tough and agile.  It is also a sport which requires specialist saddlery that has been developed over years to enhance performance.  In this issue the Society of Master Saddlers looks at the polo saddle.

Polo is a niche, high-calibre sport which is popular with both competitors and supporters alike.

Members of the Royal family have been seen on the polo pitch numerous times and the prestige that comes with the sport attracts far reaching spectators.

Adrenaline fuelled, highly technical and high speed, polo requires the utmost precision and skill from both horse and rider. An essential element in the ability to do this is high quality, well-fitting tack.

Here we take a closer look at polo saddles and the attributes required to ensure it optimises the performance of the polo player and his pony.

A strong, well-fitting tree is essential and those made of metal are more robust and durable. The saddle should have a relatively flat seat to allow for quick adjustments by the rider.  Its flaps should be shaped quite flat to allow the horse to move freely and make agile turns. Knee rolls should be minimal or not present to allow the rider to move and turn in the saddle when necessary.

The panels should be filled with high quality material and pure wool provides the ultimate luxury. Some more advanced saddle designs can be adjusted to custom fit an individual horse by altering the flocking in the panels.

Polo saddles are usually available in either full leather, suede, buffalo leather or a combination of these materials.
