A dainty little pony with his own Facebook following and huge fan club won the hearts of the judges at Equifest to claim the overall RSPCA (England and Wales) Rescue Horse Championship. Just six months ago, Gizmo was found laying near an Essex Caravan Park having been dumped in freezing conditions at only four months old. He was suffering from hypothermia, dehydration, liver failure and pneumonia and was close to death. His mother was nowhere to be seen and he was so weak and underweight he was unable to stand.
Gizmo was carried into Catley Cross Veterinary Clinic on a blanket where he received emergency medical attention to keep him alive. No one would believe that this endearing little coloured pony, fighting for his life, would be receiving a top showing accolade just six months later.
The nation immediately fell in love with Gizmo and provided him with much needed donations of rugs and equipment and a tremendous amount of support. This, combined with the outstanding love, care and attention that Gizmo received at Catley Cross Veterinary Clinic has enabled Gizmo go from strength to strength and make a truly extraordinary recovery. The RSPCA appeal that was set up for Gizmo raised an outstanding £25,000 to pay for his care and the care of other needy horses and ponies.
A few weeks ago an open day was held for Gizmo to welcome all of his well wishers and followers, which was a huge success. Despite his dreadful start in life, Gizmo has such a wonderful character and is an absolute delight.
From the moment he arrived at Equifest, Gizmo was enjoying himself and performed beautifully in the RSPCA parade before winning his RSPCA Youngstock class, expertly handled by Louise Miller, much to the delight of all his connections.
He then took his place in the championship in front of a packed audience on Saturday evening. There was not a dry eye in the house when Gizmo was called forward to be crowned overall champion of the RSPCA rescue horses and ponies. In great condition and beautifully turned out, Gizmo looked a picture of health and his incredible transformation tugged on the heart strings of many, none more so than those who had assisted him every step of the way including vet Carolyn Wyse who said: “We just can’t believe it! He was amazing! We didn’t think he would even win his class so didn’t even think about the championship. It was so emotional and we are absolutely over the moon.”
The emotions got to the judges as well and were abundant in their praise for this extraordinary pony. His handler, Louise Miller said “None of the judges spoke for very long about his story for fear of getting too emotional!”
Gizmo’s final lap of honour and traditional canter down the centre line provided a wonderful sight for everyone to enjoy. This pony’s achievement, not only in the show ring, but in fighting his way back to life is remarkable and he is sure to stick in the hearts and minds of many for years to come.
