Cyden Dressage has developed a successful breeding programme over the past four to five years using their own stallions, KWPN-approved Cyden Bodyguard Moorland, NWPC-approved pony stallion, Cyden Oostings Amigo and KWPN-approved Cyden Cadans M.
Using their own four broodmares, owner Lara Dyson focuses on breeding quality foals with the very best bloodlines.
Foaling time for any breeder is exciting, heralding the start of a new future and in the case of the foals at Cyden Dressage, the birth of a potential champion.
Lara enjoys breeding her own foals, nurturing them and giving them a good grounding before training them up from just backed up through the levels.
Cyden Dressage has recently joined forces with Laura and Tracy Milner of South Grange Stud, together with top reproductive vet Dr James Crabtree of Equine Reproductive Services (UK). All Lara’s broodmares now go to the stud to foal, spending the first couple of months in their expert care before returning to Cyden Dressage to live out in their large grass fields.
“For me, the pleasure is in the training and competing, not in buying something that can already do the job.” said Lara.
This year has seen the arrival of two gorgeous foals by Bodyguard, both stamped with his signature four white socks or unusually four white stockings in the case of Leia.
Filly, Leia, was the first born this season to broodmare, DiMaggio. Her stunning white stockings are topped off with fantastic natural movement.
Lara was thrilled when Cyden Debonair produced a beautiful colt, the first colt in five years of breeding!
As a stallion owner, Lara also takes great pleasure from seeing the success of the offspring of her stallions, most notably Bodyguard’s own graded stallion, Guardian S, who recently won the five-year-old division at the Dutch selection trials for the 2016 World Young Horse Championships.
To have a graded son at the tender age of 10 is a phenomenal achievement for a stallion so young and is testament to the quality of Bodyguard’s offspring.
After winning the Shearwater Young Dressage Horse Championship for four-year-olds in 2015, stallion Gladstone, by Bodyguard, has had further success winning the five-year-old class at Somerford Park Premier League.
“Breeding done in the right way is incredibly rewarding, there is nothing like laying all the best foundations in the early years and on into training, to see all the hard work come together as they start to progress.” said Lara.
“I am also very proud when owners that have used my stallions on their own mares approach me to say how fantastic their foals are and in particular what wonderful temperaments they have.”
Frozen semen is available all year round from Cyden Bodyguard Moorland, Cyden Oostings Amigo and Cyden Cadans M.
