Horse owner Carol-Ann Crean had the great opportunity to appear in a demonstration with Pat Parelli during his first ever visit to Ireland.  Here we catch up with her to find out more about her Parelli journey and her demonstration debut!

1, Tell us about yourself and how you first became interested in horses?

I got into horses by accident actually. As a young girl, my sister had been recommended by a physiotherapist to begin horse riding to improve her balance, and my Mam brought me along as company for her. That was the start of it! I continued with lessons every week, went to pony camp, and as the years went by did hunting, one day eventing, hunter trials and so on but what I really enjoyed was show jumping.

2, Tell us about your horse?

The mare I have is called Jessie. She is 14-years-old. She has a super jump but gets quite anxious when jumping a course and gets very powerful.  Jessie is 17.1hh so as you can imagine she gets very strong so related distances in jumping can be very challenging.

3, What was it like appearing in the demonstration with Pat?

Appearing in the demonstration with Pat was brilliant! It was amazing that within minutes he knew exactly what the root of the problem was with Jessie and was able to demonstrate and teach me exercises to lessen these problems.   It was both very enjoyable and quite nerve-wracking at the same time.  In such a short space of time I learned so much to take home and to help with my Parelli journey.

4, How did you first get into Parelli?

I got in to Parelli through a girl I know who teaches with me. Ellen had told me all about Parelli and how she found it was working great for her. She invited me out to her place to watch a lesson with her instructor, Sarah Brady. Sarah was lovely and explained to me what the basic principles of Parelli involved and it has just progress from there.

5, What are your Parelli goals?

I am following a programme with Sarah and her husband Chris now as a follow on from my Parelli experience and it's great because I can already see a change in how Jessie behaves. The whole Parelli programme is so interesting as it teaches you how horses think and why they display certain behaviours. It has certainly changed my whole approach to doing ground work and reacting to situations with horses.
