Thinking about buying an ex-racehorse or struggling with one of your own?
The team at Guy Robertson Horsemanship are providing a fascinating insight into how to retrain racehorses that have spent years on the gallops, into calm, safe riding horses ready to take part in a wide variety of disciplines and activities.
The demonstration – Racehorse to Riding Horse – takes place at the Northern Racing College on Friday, February 20 at 7pm.
Following a natural horsemanship philosophy and approach, Guy specialises in retraining horses and ponies to produce confident and respectful equines that are easy and enjoyable to ride.
Retraining ex-racehorses has become very popular over the last few years, thanks to nationwide competition and programmes showcasing how adaptable they are when it comes to transferring their talents to another discipline.
But the journey horse and rider go through can be paved with highs and lows and during the demonstration Guy will provide advice and tips on how to work with ex-racehorses when they become tense or difficult.
At the end of a horse’s racing career responsible owners and trainers do their best to find ex-racehorses new homes and activities, whether this is an individual owner or organisation dedicated to re-educating racehorses as riding horses.
However as we all know with horses, sometimes things are a little bit more difficult than you expect. Don’t under estimate that it can take quite a lot of time for a horse to learn how to adjust to its new role.
Guy will be demonstrating his horsemanship training methods which he has successfully used to retrain racehorses for polo and polocrosse, but which are applicable to all equestrian disciplines.
The demonstration, which is a fund-raiser for the Northern Racing College is being promoted by the Friends of NRC and will take place on Friday, February 20 at the college, Rossington Hall , on the old Great North Road near Bawtry at 7pm. Tickets are £10, including refreshments and free parking.
