The Society of Master Saddlers rolled out the red carpet for the film premier – The ‘Mysterie’ of Saddlery, The Art of Saddlery from Hide to Horse at The Barbican cinema in London.
More than 150 members, guests and VIPs packed into the cinema to see the fascinating hour long film by documentary film maker Paul Kelly.
Filming for over 100 hours, Paul travelled the length and breadth of the country in his search to provide the journey of leather from a raw hide to finished piece of saddlery, the fitting process and beyond.
A welcome drinks reception supported by BETA was well received and added to the celebratory mood of the occasion.
Produced by The Society of Master Saddlers the film provides an insight into not only how saddlery is made but also the trade as a whole and the skills and craftsmanship required. The film will eventually be sold on DVD.
Said Paul: “I really have enjoyed the process and all the filming required which has eventually come together.
“Hopefully it provides an insider’s view into the saddlery world, looking at many aspects that haven’t previously been covered in this type of film.”
Added Society of Master Saddlers’ Chief Executive, Hazel Morley: “To actually see the film finally come together is fantastic and a wonderful achievement for everyone involved from the filming to direction, those interviewed and who provided their time and services.”
From visiting saddlery sales and auctions around the country to looking at the tanning process, work of a Master Saddler, side-saddle expertise, metalwork, the history and heritage of saddlery, the currying process, harness making specialism, the pliance system, life at a tack shop, the Saddlery Training Centre, work at the Royal Mews as well as leather skills required to make objects such as leather kitchen door handles, and a visit to the National Saddlery Competition, the film really does cover all aspects of the industry.
Said Society of Master Saddlers’ President, Peter Wilkes: “The film was so good I would consider giving away a copy with every saddle sold in markets where they appreciate the quality and craftsmanship involved.”
Added BETA Executive Director and Secretary, Claire Williams: “It was a fascinating film showcasing the highly talented skills the industry has to offer.”
Said Laurence Pearman of Cirencester Saddlery: “I thought the film was excellent and very well put together and I think will appeal to the general public as well as those in the saddlery and equestrian industry.”
Added Steve Marks of Ideal Saddles: “The film was well balanced and gave a great overview of the industry as a whole. It also showed the requirements for saddles and bridles to fit well if we want horses to perform well and the expertise involved when it comes to saddle and bridle fitting.”
