Dora the Speedi-Beet Pony Retires at Home
23-YEAR-OLD Dora, the original face of Speedi-Beet, has returned home to retire with the I’Anson family, makers of British Horse Feeds, after 13 years away.
11.2hh chestnut mare Dora (Techon Diodey), was bought as a four-year-old by the family for their eldest daughter Hattie, who was then aged 6.
After lots of schooling at home, Dora and Hattie had lots of fun with the West of Yore Pony Club, winning plenty of rosettes at local shows. After being outgrown by Hattie, her younger sister Ellie took over the rider, before she too outgrew little Dora, and the family had to bid her a sad farewell after owning her for six years.
However, their first pony was never far from their thoughts, and 13 years later Will I’Anson, Sales Director of British Horse Feeds, tracked Dora down to Northamptonshire, where she was enjoying a quieter life on loan with another family.
After getting in touch with her owners, who were ready to retire her, Will was able to bring Dora back to North Yorkshire – much to the surprise of the rest of the family!
Will explained: “Dora was our first pony and through owning her, I came to understand a lot more about horse ownership.
“Although we were manufacturing horse feed in a small way, this led me into a greater understanding of the equine feed market, principles of nutrition and ownership and development of the division British Horse Feeds as it is today.
“Speedi-Beet and Fibre-Beet are two of our very successful products, and little Dora was the original face of Speedi-Beet!”
He added: “It’s great to have her home! We never forget where we have come from, and to that end we owe Dora so much. She’s a lovely honest pony who always looked after my girls, so we’re delighted to be able to care for her now she’s retired.”
