Here we catch up with Primrose and her foal, Teddy, who are being supported by Alltech, whilst they are in the care of World Horse Welfare’s Glenda Spooner Farm.
The past few months have seen Primrose and her foal Teddy introduced to a new groom, Billie-Jo Roby, after their previous groom decided to go travelling.
Primrose was rescued from an abandoned herd, suffering from severe photosensitivity so it was vital throughout summer that she had additional protection. This has meant the staff at World Horse Welfare’s Glenda Spooner Farm in Somerset, have taken great care to protect Primrose from the sun.
She had Filterbac cream applied to her nose and happily wore a fly mask, which has worked perfectly and Primrose’s skin has done extremely well.
Said Billie-Jo: “Keeping Primrose out of the direct sun has definitely been the best way to keep her comfortable. During the hotter, sunnier days they were both moved into the crew yard. While they rested and sheltered they were able to meet the public which is also very good for their socialisation and rehabilitation. Both Primrose and Teddy took it all in their stride meeting and greeting the many visitors to Glenda Spooner Farm.”
Teddy is turning into a very handsome boy and Billie-Jo describes him as a bold, self-assured character who picks up new skills very quickly. This has been evident during his training sessions where the grooms have been leading him around the farm as he has been moved between the fields and crew yards.
Primrose was treated to a bath and Teddy was allowed to accompany her, however when she returned to the field, the heavens opened and she took full advantage to have a good roll, making her look more of a bay than a cremello!
The farrier has also visited them both twice over the summer to keep their feet in good condition. On both occasions they behaved very well and having his mum by his side gave Teddy confidence with his first farrier experience.
With the heat of the summer now a distant memory, Primrose is happy to finally be free from wearing the fly mask, meaning more time to be spent out in the field, which also allows Teddy to burn off some energy!
