Arena 4
As the grey skies drew in over Stoneleigh Park, it was a previous Horse of the Year Show ridden welsh section A winner that took the tricolor in Arena 4 after a marathon amount of entries in the Thor Atkinson Steel Fabrications Ltd. Mountain and Moorland Working Hunter Pony classes. Coming forward as champion from the last section of the day was Shropshire based Sarah Parker riding The Countess of Shrewsbury’s Chetwynd Jasper. The 9 year old grey has been making the transition to the jumping arena ever since his win at HOYS in 2017. “It’s taken some time to get him to where he is now; he definitely got out of the right side of bed this morning! He’s a bold pony but has found the transition to fences a little more challenging than some of our other successful ponies but that’s why we love him” explained Sarah.
Taking the reserve was the 8 year old Connemara Caoran Beg Macdara. Ridden by Isaac Thomason and heading the 143cm section, the talented grey by Moorland Snowy River has been having a successful season and was recently placed at The Royal International before making the journey from Cumbria for today’s qualifier.
With a total of 137 entries throughout the four sections, the remaining qualifying spots were hard fought. Heading the 133cm section was previous HOYS winner 10 year old, Glynceirch Amlyn for Staffordshire based Jodie Haywood. The ever consistent little chestnut has been in the bridesmaid spot on more than one occasion this year and posted a foot perfect round to top a strong line up today. Speaking after her win Jodie said “I’m so pleased with him today, he jumped as well as ever and I was hopeful he had done enough.”
The Exc 143 section was won by no stranger to Horse of the Year Show Dycott Welsh King and Ross Keys. The 12 year old stallion by Mitcheltray Welsh Prince, has been with Ross for five years now and has also previously evented.
Showing World Magazine Arena 5
In the Showing World Magazine Arena 5, the Cobs took over proceedings with The Leeman Family Lightweight Cob HOYS qualifier which went to Callum Potts riding the experienced Chaplin. A previous Royal International winner, Chaplin has been with Callum for four seasons now but has taken a bit of a back step this season due to other rides making this only his second outing of the year. “I didn’t expect him to win today which makes this even more special” said a delighted Callum.
Reserve Champion and second in The Leeman Family Lightweight Cob went to Kirstine Douglas riding Morean Hamilton’s Mr Bear.
The Heavyweight division was headed by Lynn Russell riding Carole West’s Volantis. Starting his career with Lynn as a 3 year old, he was then sold to Carole and has remained with Lynn ever since. This is the second heavyweight cob ticket for Lynn with a total of five horses already qualified for the show in October.
It was a popular win in The Leeman Family Maxi Cob qualifier for amateur rider Avril Bartolomy and her husband Robin’s Clantara Shadow Play. Bought as an unbroken 3 year old, the horse has taken many overall amateur supreme championships throughout his career and revelled in the slightly damp conditions here today.
Contesting his first Maxi qualifier of the season and finishing second was the coloured gelding Premiere, owned by Christine Pickersgill and ridden by Wayne Thorneycroft.
Geldings came to the fore in the Simon Constable Equine Vets and Mr & Mrs Roberts Arab qualifier, with both the first and second from the division taking the champion and reserve slots respectively. It was the turn of Northamptonshire based Kimberley Bates on her mother’s Rafeekah that finished ahead of Sian Warman riding Kelly Bewley’s AA Dazzling Dream. Still a novice and only broken last year, Rafeekah is entirely home produced by Kimberley who is usually more at home in the Mountain and Moorland ring. It was a chance purchase when searching for a part bred that united this combination together, “I work for Katy Marriot Payne and usually ride native ponies but we had wanted a part bred for some time however we saw him in the field and just knew he was special. It makes it even more special to know we’ve done everything with him from the start, we are so excited” continued Kimberley.
Standing reserve was another lightly shown gelding, AA Dazzling Dream. By PSY Dream, the 9 year gelding is produced by Sian Warman and has only been lightly shown this year with three seconds in his only qualifiers contested. Sian commented “He has given the judge a fantastic ride today in the adverse weather, I couldn’t be more proud of him.”
A newcomer to side saddle, Deliah Rose triumphed for Rachal Fairbairn in the Ladies Side Saddle qualifier. The 8 year old coloured mare has only been with Rachal a year but was a chance buy when the search for a gelding ended with the purchase of the dressage trained coloured mare. “She was nothing that we went looking for but is everything we wanted. I’m amazed with her today and couldn’t be happier” commented Rachal after her win.
Unfortunately the weather conditions remained on the damper side for the Catplant Group of Companies Show Hunter qualifiers however quality was high and it was the 17.3hh heavyweight gelding Correnagh Cove for Anne Hebron who took the tricolor in his first open season. Focusing on novice classes last year, Correnagh Cove also has shown a talented over fences. “He cruised round like a sports car for me today, it’s the best he’s gone all season” said a delighted Anne.
Heading the Middleweight division and taking the qualification today was Paul Langrick riding Forans Matilda. Owned by Isle of Man based J Hathersich-Jones, the grey mare started the season as a novice and also competes in Ladies. “He goes home for the winter and comes back to me for the summer” explained Paul.
The lightweight division was won Caledonia owned by Penny Clarke. Having already qualified in the Ladies Hunters earlier in the season at Derbyshire Festival he started his career in the showjumping arena before making the preferable transition to showing and today adds the astride class to his ticket tally.
The ExcLOOsive Small Show Hunter qualifier was won by Charles Le Moignan riding Oscar Fox for Mr & Mrs Binks.
Arena 6
Opening the day in Arena 6 was the Brereton Small Hack qualifier which was won by Burfordly Sea Wolf and Karen Rowbotham. With 14 entries in the David Stennett Large Hack qualifier, it was this division that also crowned the section champion in the form of My Madison Square and Steph Haslam. “He couldn’t have gone any better for me today, he’s been knocking at the door all year and has had some great wins this season” explained Steph.
The second half of the day in Arena 6 belonged to Phoebe Price as she took both the Ponies Association UK M&M Championship on the home produced Connemara Sydserff Gismo and the Topham Barnes Riding Horse Championship aboard Carwgyn Whirlwind Romance. No stranger to the spotlight having previously taken the Supreme Pony Title at Horse of the Year Show in 2017, Phoebe is having an amazing season and is in her first season of making the transition to horse classes.
Reserve champion in the M & M championship went to the second in the large breed section, Knockbridge Drumdun ridden by Northamptonshire based Katie Bates.
Standing reserve in the Topham Barnes Riding Horse was the winner of the 20 strong entry large riding horse class Firstman, owned by Judy Bennetts and ridden by Helen Baker.
