A collection of 12 large-scale portraits of members of the Household Cavalry by the photographic artist Ripley will go on show at the National Horseracing Museum from 8 to 30 July.

And to mark the occasion, the Band of the Household Cavalry will perform a concert in the museum’s courtyard on the evening of 14 July. The largest State Ceremonial Band in the British Army, the Band of the Household Cavalry will perform a mix of classics, regimental marches, trumpet calls, fanfares and big band hits.

The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment: The Coronation Year Exhibition features extraordinary images of soldiers from The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals mounted on their horses and posed on buildings throughout London, overlooking the capital from Trafalgar Square to Canary Wharf.

A boxed set of the portraits has been presented to His Majesty King Charles III as the official Coronation Present from his Household Cavalry.

“I had an idea back in 2012 when photographing from rooftops in New York to do an art piece with horses placed on rooftops overlooking an urban landscape,” explained Ripley. “I started to formulate ideas which would involve the Household Cavalry, portraying them as “protectors” – “The Trusted Guardians” – overlooking London.”

The project took more than four years to complete, involving soldiers posing with their horses in full ceremonial dress, lots of behind-the-scenes work from the grooms and farriers, and between 200-300 hours of digital work on each image.

The limited-edition prints are available to purchase as large framed gallery pieces, as a beautifully presented boxed set, and as smaller framed editions. Ripley is donating 50% of the profits from the exhibition to The Household Cavalry Foundation, which provides charitable and pastoral support to all members of the Household Cavalry family and also cares for the Household Cavalry’s heritage and the welfare of their retired horses.
