With summer come worries about allergies. The pleasure of the warmer weather makes thousands of lives miserable.

And for many horse and pony owners, the pollen watch becomes essential to ensure appropriate precautions are taken.

Pollen allergy is a condition that affects 2 in 10 people in the UK; hay fever is most apparent from May to September and worst during June and July.

Common symptoms are sneezing, itchy nose, eyes, throat or ears, watery eyes, loss of concentration and feeling unwell.

Tips to ease the symptoms include staying indoors, keeping car windows shut, avoiding anywhere with freshly mown grass, wearing wraparound sunglasses, as well as taking tablets and sprays.

With advice to stay indoors away from grass, especially during mid-morning and early evening when pollen level peaks, horse owners face a battle from the start.

Handling hay can often aggravate hay fever and pollen allergies even further due to the high levels of dust in hay, making dealing with hay on a daily basis a nightmare for sufferers.

Horses also suffer from breathing problems, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Small Airway Disease (SAD) due to hay dust.  With 80% of horses stabled part of the time, many have a degree of airway inflammation, even if they are asymptomatic; this undoubtedly has a detrimental effect on their performance.

The HAYGAIN hay steamer provides the ideal solution for sufferers, both human and equine: it steams a bale of hay at over 100?C, destroying all the dust, spores and mould found in hay.

Said Lucy Killingbeck, Show Horse Producer and International Showing Judge: “I have suffered from hay fever for many years and handling hay gives me the same symptoms as sitting in a hay field in the middle of the summer.  Since I have used the HAYGAIN hay steamer, this is no longer the case.”
