Newmarket will unveil two exciting summer exhibitions in June, confirming the town’s status as this summer’s must-visit destination for art lovers.
On 3 June, The Urban Frame: Mutiny In Colour opens at the National Horse Racing Museum, a major contemporary art exhibition with works by Banksy, Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and many others.
At the same time, Discover Newmarket will launch a complementary creative initiative, 'Newmarket in Colour'. The town’s tourism service has joined forces with Newmarket’s key stakeholders to commission a number of striking murals to bring colour to public spaces around the town centre.
The works will be created by professional artists alongside local schoolchildren and community groups, with art and craft sessions being held at several venues.
Tracey Harding, Manager of Discover Newmarket, said: "With the high level of visitors expected to come to the Museum this summer, we wanted the whole town to embrace the theme and show just how diverse Newmarket's art scene can be. This has been a wonderful collaboration by our businesses, as well as providing opportunities for young people to express their observations and feelings through art and learning new skills as part of this positive community project.”
The murals for 'Newmarket In Colour' will pop up across town over the coming months, while 'The Urban Frame: Mutiny In Colour' show will go on display at the National Horse Racing Museum from 3 June to 1 October.
The museum is better known as the home of the Packard Galleries of British Sporting Art, with a permanent collection that includes masterpieces by revered equine artists including Sir Alfred Munnings and George Stubbs. The juxtaposition of the modern and historic works promises to provide an intriguing contrast for visitors to consider.
Adding another burst of colour, Newmarket BID will be embracing the theme by dressing some streets with overhead art installations of butterflies. The business-led organisation will also give some of the empty shop windows a creative makeover and is inviting offices and retail businesses to decorate their windows and outdoor areas, too.
Natalie Robinson, Manager at Newmarket BID, said: "We know that business has a huge part to play in building momentum around Newmarket's role as a centre for art. Therefore, we are very excited about being involved in this initiative and providing a colourful welcome to everyone who visits Newmarket this summer.”
