Hartpury show jumping ace Tillie Newman will continue her path towards the top after being selected into a British Equestrian Federation (BEF) backed excellence programme.
The 17-year-old, who is also one of the college’s equine students, will be part of the BEF England Excel Talent Programme squad for the next two years after impressing selectors with her performances over the last 12 months.
“I’m absolutely delighted that the British Equestrian Federation have included me as part of their talent development pathway,” the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Horse Management student said.
“Hopefully it can be the next step on my journey but at the moment I’m just looking forward to getting started and developing my riding as much as I can, both at Hartpury and with BEF.
I’ve had to work hard to get to where I am now and I don’t want it to stop here so I’ll keep trying to improve as much as I can and being part of this programme is the perfect way to do that.”
The Excel programme is backed by Sport England and seeks to identify and support riders and horses that demonstrate talent and potential in Olympic and Paralympic disciplines.
Tillie, who was also part of the Equine Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence programme which runs at Hartpury, will have access to top equestrian specialists including international coaches, physiotherapists, psychologists, farriers, saddlers, vets and nutritionists as part of her continued development on the programme.
Hartpury’s Equine Elite Academy Director, Lizzel Winter, said: “’It’s always great to see Hartpury students being recognised by national excellence programmes and to see the hard work and determination put in by Tillie acknowledged. We will obviously continue to support Tillie and help to improve her riding here at Hartpury while she is part of the BEF pathway.
“Her performances over the past year have shown that she deserves to be part of the squad and we look forward to what the future holds for an exciting young rider.”
