The latest episode of H&C’s lockdown series, The Check In, features Olympian, former World Champion, and all-round eventing superstar Zara Tindall in conversation with Jenny Rudall. Zara talks about how she’s coping with lockdown life and adapting to the changes in routine for both her team and her family.
Zara reflects on how, as a competitor, she’s dealt with the cancellation of major events and had to change goals for herself, the grooms and her horses. And how she’s channelled her competitive instincts into new areas such as the recent Equestrian Relief charity event that raised £250,000 for the NHS Covid-19 appeal. Zara captained Team Eventing to victory putting in a strong individual performance with second place in the painting challenge, a task she took very seriously indeed!
The lockdown has meant very different regimes for the horses and Zara is enjoying the opportunity to spend more time working on strengthening the younger ones who would not receive this much attention during a normal season. It’s also been an opportunity to work on her own fitness. And, of course, there are all the challenges of home schooling where, fortunately, husband Mike’s mathematics skills nicely balance her own preference for working with children Mia and Lena on their reading and writing. That said, Zara’s very much looking forward to the forthcoming return to school.
Overall, Zara reflects on how lockdown has been a big pause in normal life and a chance to reconsider and refocus on what’s truly important.
The programme, as with all episodes of The Check In, is free to watch on H&C and on demand at horseandcountry.tv or in the free H&C apps.
